Public Safety Alert, Fraud using property assessment agency to get personal information

Friday, September 6, 2013 - 3:58 PM
Financial Crimes Unit: 416-808-7238

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of callers claiming to represent a service provider agency of the Government of Ontario, and to always safeguard their personal information.

In recent weeks, the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) has become aware that a person, or persons, is placing phone calls to property owners claiming to represent MPAC, asking for personal information. MPAC has reported these incidents to the Ontario Provincial Police.

MPAC does not make calls to collect personal information. If you receive a phone call from anyone claiming to represent MPAC, requesting personal information, do not provide it. If you have any questions or receive such calls, please call MPAC's Customer Contact Centre toll-free at 1-877-635-6722.

Alternatively, if you suspect you, or someone you know, has been affected by this scam, contact your local police service or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Gail Regan at 416-808-7238.

FRAUD. Recognize it. Report it. Stop it.

Constable Victor Kwong, Corporate Communications, for Detective Gail Regan, Financial Crimes Unit
